All eyes have been on London this past month, as back-to-back-to-back-to-back tragedies have left hearts across the Internet broken for the city’s people, and those throughout the U.K.
Last week, London’s Grenfell Tower caught fire in the middle of the night from what residents believed to have been a faulty fridge. The 24-story apartment building housed 160 living spaces—all of which were burned to ashes in the blaze that has so far claimed the lives of 79 people—with rescue crews still searching for bodies, five days later.
Images of the deadly fire have been compared to the 9/11 attacks, and stories continue to surface of residents and bystanders who sacrificed themselves to save those around them.
One of those heroes is 22-year-old Farhad Neda, who carried his disabled mother on his back down 24 flights of stairs to escape the blaze.
His mother, 55-year-old Shakila Neda, has a muscular disorder, leaving her weak and unable to do much for herself. According to a family friend, Farhad wrapped her arms around his neck and carried her on his back down all 24 floors of the tower.
“He sprinted with her down the stairs the whole way,” the source told The Sun. “I just don’t know how he did it. He must have summoned the strength somehow in the moment. With all the smoke and the flames, it really is unbelievable.”

Farhad’s father, Saber, was with Farhad and Shakila when the three of them exited their apartment, but became separated from them during their sprint through the stairwell. He is still listed among the missing.
