Who is Dylan Beard? Walmart Employee Shocks the Competition, Sets Sights on Paris 2024

Dylan Beard’s ascent from underdog to Olympic hopeful is a testament to perseverance, dedication, and sheer determination. Hailing from Baltimore, Maryland, this 25-year-old hurdler has captured the hearts of many with his remarkable journey in track and field.

Dylan’s passion for hurdling began during his teenage years in Baltimore, where he set numerous records that still adorn the halls of his high school. His journey wasn’t without challenges, yet his approach remained steadfast and relaxed, embracing each meet with a mindset of having “nothing to lose, a lot to gain.”

Unexpected Triumph

In February, at the Millrose Games at The Armory in New York City, Dylan Beard lined up with seven other runners for the 60m hurdles. Commentators spoke highly of several of the racers, listing medals and accolades, overlooking completely the unknown runner in lane one.

7.44 seconds and five long leaps later, commentators scrambled to name the race’s winner. “Is that…Dylan Beard?”

His breakthrough victory made him the third fastest hurdler in the world, and earned him a coveted spot at the U.S. olympic trials in Eugene, Oregon later this week, where he’ll compete for a spot on Team USA in Paris next month.

After the historic win, Dylan Beard returned home to Wake Forest, North Carolina and resumed his job in the Deli at Walmart.

From the Walmart Deli Counter to Chasing the Olympic Dream

By day, the 25-year-old trains rigorously at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, NC, under the guidance of coaches who commend his unmatched dedication. By night, he assumes a different role behind the deli counter at Walmart, where colleagues and customers alike admire his commitment and service.
