Nelson Mandela said it best: “No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite.”

His words couldn’t be more true for 4-year-old duo Jia Sarnicola and Zuri Copeland.

The two little girls from Miami are “besties.” But more than that, they’re a lesson to all adults about what it means to exude love and reject hate.

“My sister and her best friend think they’re twins because they have the same birthday and this was the outcome,” Victoria Williams, Zuri’s older sister, wrote in a viral Facebook post.

“They met at school and have been attached to the hip ever since. They go to plays together, carnivals, parties, etc. They are actually two days apart but share their birthday party, hence, why they believe they’re twins.”

Williams explains that the “twins” were recently standing in line to have their faces painted when she witnessed a striking conversation between them and two other girls in line.

“They were standing in line for face paint at a birthday party when they overheard two girls in front of them say they were sisters. So Zuri and Jia decided to join in and tell the girls that they were twins. However, the response they got was a little harsh as the girls told them they couldn’t be twins because they weren’t the same skin color. “

Williams said Jia was immediately upset and began crying. But that didn’t stop her from making sure those girls understood that she and Zuri were sisters.

“We are twins because we have the same birthday and share the same soul!”

Holy cow, perspective.

Williams says Jia’s statement left everyone at the party speechless, and no one has since questioned their sisterhood or “twin-ship.”

At just 4 years old, Jia and Zuri are literally our hope for the future.

I’m convinced that if God is going to use anyone to change the cultural climate of our divided world, it’s children. Jesus himself instructed us to have “childlike faith.” I believe seeing the world through the eyes of a child will have a similar effect on the way we treat and love one another.

May our interactions be childlike today, and our words be kind. Share Jia and Zuri’s inspiring friendship with the people you love today!
