“It’s a Murder Bill”: Colorado Democrats Vote Down Bill Mandating Medical Care for Babies That Survive Abortions

Colorado Democrats have voted against a bill that would require medical care to be provided to survivors of failed abortions.

According to Colorado.gov, House Bill 1068 establishes a “physician-patient relationship” between a baby born alive and the doctor who attempted to perform the abortion.

House Bill 1068 would mandate that doctors “exercise the same degree of professional skill, care, and diligence to preserve the life and health of the child as a reasonably diligent and conscientious physician would render to any other child born alive at the same gestational age and requires that the child born alive be immediately transferred to a hospital.”

Failure to comply with the bill would be considered a class 3 felony for ‘unprofessional conduct on a medical license,’ resulting in a $100,00 civil penalty.

The Military Affairs Committee and House State Veterans killed the bill in addition to House Bill 1098, which would have outlawed abortions for fetuses past 22 weeks gestation. Colorado Politics confirmed that Republicans supported both bills while Democrats opposed them.

Shane Sandridge, the Republican Colorado Rep. sponsoring House Bill 1068, noted that the bill was not against abortion, but against murder.

“It’s not an abortion bill. It’s a murder bill,” said a disappointed Sandridge.

Republican Rep. Dave Williams also spoke out about the shocking blow to the pro-life community.

“It’s unfortunate because there is a large population of Coloradans that support this common-sense restriction, so that we can protect life and ensure the right to life is upheld,” said Williams.

“We are talking about children born alive,” added Kristi Burton Brown, vice chair of the Colorado Republican party.

A tweet by the director of the Centennial Institute, Jeff Hunt, echoed the sentiments of the Republican Representatives.

“The Colorado legislature just voted down a bill that would require a doctor to provide medical care to a child who is born alive after surviving an abortion,” wrote Hunt. “A child is born, in need of help, and the Colorado legislature voted against mandating care. God have mercy.”

Jennifer Popik, the legislative director for National Right to Life, called the outrageous legislation “infanticide.”

“Pro-abortion Democrats oppose this bill and they should be forced to explain why their allegiance to the abortion industry’s agenda should allow a practice that is tantamount to infanticide,” said Popik. “It is outrageous that a born-alive human person may be subjected to lethal violence with impunity or be treated as if she is medical waste.”
