You Decide: Genius Airplane Travel Hack or Annoying Trick?

Jess Darrington (@where.is.briggs) is a “mom of two toddlers” and travel blogger with now more than 11 million followers. When she shares a travel hack, people with young families are sure to pay attention. This airplane seating hack that she said “sometimes” works has gained some serious complaints, especially from those traveling alone.

The “key word is ‘sometimes,'” admits Darrington.

Travel Blogger Shares Airplane Seating Hack, But Fellow Passengers Find it Annoying

“We travel together a lot,” shared Darrington. She and her family seem to always be on the go—including international trips.

Travel blogger Darrington shared a brief TikTok video of how the family of four scored extra seating on their national flight—at no additional cost.

Anyone knows, that traveling with small children is challenging at best. Even adults can become annoyed at the tight quarters on a flight.

So, you add short attention spans and an innate inability to be flexible, and kids often cry out in protest. In fact, Darrington admitted that her own baby is “not a fun lap infant for that long.”

“On our way home from Amsterdam to Salt Lake City we tried this hack and it worked beautifully!” shared Darrington.

Darrington “booked four seats,” two window seats and two aisle seats, leaving the middle seats open as part of her airplane seating hack.

The video explained that “No one booked the middle two seats so we had two rows to ourselves for an 11 hour flight.”

This hack worked for the Darrington family, but it doesn’t always work that way, as the travel blogger mentioned. There are times that someone does, in fact, book that middle seat.

When there’s someone else in the middle seat, an awkward situation can occur. If everyone stays in the assigned seats, there would be a stranger between the parent and the child. Or, someone who booked that middle seat could be annoyed when asked to switch seats.

When you book your flights, be aware that this airplane seating hack could be risky.

The photos in the TikTok video showed the kids comfortably sound asleep on the long flight.

According to FOX News, Darrington explained that they’ve tried the airplane seating hack a variety of times.

“The first time that we tried it out was when I just had one kid, and he was a lap infant at the time. So, it was my husband, myself and the lap infant, and we were all flying to Europe. And when I was booking tickets, the flight was empty, like there [was] nobody on,” she said.

She booked herself and the infant the window seat and her husband the aisle seat. The travel hacked worked as the family of three was able to enjoy the entire row.

“I kind of gambled a little bit. But when we got on the flight, that middle seat was empty, and it was so nice because we had a little bit of wiggle room,” explained Darrington.
