Going to get a haircut seems like it might be a pretty simple task. They drape the cape around you, ask what kind of style you’re looking for, and with the snip of some scissors, you’re on your way to a whole new you!
For 16-year-old Evan O’Dwyer, a visit to the barber shop wasn’t so easy.
Evan has autism, and the overstimulation of the hair salon became too uncomfortable for him to handle.

Halfway through his haircut he ran from the stylist chair and darted straight for his “safe place” in the family’s minivan.
Having cut Evan’s hair for years, Donncha O’Connell knew exactly what to do next. The barber made his way out to the minivan with his styling tools in hand. After letting him calm down for a few minutes, it was a team effort to get Evan’s hair looking great—but this patient barber had no problem with it.

With Evan’s permission, Donncha climbed INTO the family van and proceeded to cut the teen’s hair, while Evan’s brother held his hands tightly to calm his nerves.

Donncha didn’t have to go they extra mile to help Evan get a fresh new do, but his patience and understanding speaks volumes. I have no doubt that his actions built even more trust and comfort between he and Evan. Future haircuts are sure to be a breeze!
