David Bowie, one of the most influential artists of his time, passed away yesterday morning after a secret 18-month battle with liver cancer. He had just celebrated his 69th birthday a day before his death.
Now, his wife of 23 years, Iman Abaulmajid, is turning to God for strength. Just hours before her husband died, she shared this tweet:
The caption spoke volumes with a single word: “Rise.”
The day before, the 60-year-old supermodel shared these powerful words, again with the same caption:
And quite a memory he is. Iman has not yet made a public statement about her husband’s death, but thousands of others have.
Perhaps Bowie’s long-time friend, producer Tony Visconti, said it best: “His death was no different from his life – a work of art…He was an extraordinary man, full of love and life. He will always be with us. For now, it is appropriate to cry.”
While it’s tragic to mourn the loss of such an adored cultural icon and even more so for those closest to him, it’s also beautiful to see how loss can bring people to their knees and draw them closer to God.
Iman is right. The struggle is “Real,” but only He can heal. May He continue to be her comfort in this heartbreaking time.
