“I Get a Text: ‘I Didn’t Know She Was Dating a Black Boy, Did You?’ It Took Me All Day to Think Up a Response…”

Heather Boyer was taken aback when she received a text regarding the color of her daughter’s boyfriend’s skin. Shortly after her daughter changed her profile picture, the mother saw a message roll in saying, “I didn’t know she was dating a black boy, did you?”

Reflecting on all of the admirable qualities that this young man had that went so much further than skin deep, Heather was at a loss for words for the better part of the day.

Though she never ended up responding personally to that unexpected text, Heather decided to reply publicly on Facebook in order to set the record straight about the boy’s character that couldn’t be defined by pigment. Her poignant message has since spread like wildfire, amassing nearly 300,000 shares.
