Dad Can’t Remember His Own Family Anymore—Until His Son Came Up With This Genius Plan

In this heartwarming video that’s quickly gone viral, you’ll see Simon ‘Mac’ McDermott and his 80-year-old father, Ted. The two drive around the city, singing their hearts out to “Quando, Quando, Quando.”

It’s not their singing voices or their smiles that has made the Internet fall in love with this duo though.

This musical moment is special and joyous because Ted has Alzheimer’s. He was a singer and entertainer his entire life, performing for audiences across England, and teaching his kids the same love for music.

Ted’s memory has gradually been deteriorating. In 2013, he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, and over the past few years, it’s become harder and harder to recognize his family and loved ones. He also experiences angry outbursts, and doesn’t remember them once they’re over.

“Dad was a singer all his life—he was a Butlin’s Redcoat and then traveled around singing in clubs around the country,” said Mac. “He worked in a factory after he got married and still did the bit of singing on side. His nickname is ‘The Songaminute Man’—simply because of how many songs he knows. In the last few years his memory has deteriorated a lot—often not recognizing family and with many aggressive episodes.”

Simon says that incredibly, music seems to “bring him back,” even if only for a few minutes. “Now when we’ve got him singing again he’s back in the room. It’s these moments that we treasure.”

The clip is short and sweet, just like Simon’s time with his dad’s memory, but it’s melted the hearts of people across the world. Simon says he hopes to post more videos of Ted, and ultimately raise awareness and money to fund the Alzheimer’s Society.

“Alzheimer’s Society provides a telephone helpline to sufferers and their families,” Simon wrote on the support page. “I cannot begin to describe how a stranger’s voice at the end of the phoneline helped when things got really bad.”

For now, Simon hopes to keep his dad singing and soak up these precious moments for as long as they possibly can.
