WATCH: Man With Dementia Remembers His Harmony as Wife Sings Christian Hymn

We often pass off dementia as a disease that causes people to “be forgetful.” But statistics reflect that it is actually the sixth leading cause of death in the U.S., killing more people than breast and prostate cancer combined.

But amidst the painful battle against this brain-erasing disease, people like Mallory Headings’ grandfather still have the courage to sing “it is well with my soul.”

In a touching viral video, Mallory shares a glimpse into the soul of her God-fearing grandpa as he sings the favorite hymn with his family at his bedside.

“My grandparents watched me every day while my parents were at work until I was 12,” Mallory wrote on Facebook. “They were a huge part of my upbringing. My grandpa has always loved music. My earliest memories are of him and Grandma singing music from The Gaithers. They love southern gospel. There was always music in their home. He was put in the nursing home yesterday for the first time after a few days in the hospital. Before my family left, we sang these old hymns and my grandpa still remembers his harmony.”

In true Notebook style, the sweet elderly man’s memory comes flooding back for a harmonious minute in time that Mallory’s family will cherish forever.
