What Is Maundy Thursday?—How to Celebrate During Holy Week

As we celebrate Holy Week, the week leading up to Easter, you may start to wonder, what is Maundy Thursday? Three days before Easter, we come to Maundy Thursday. "Maundy" comes from the Latin word "mandatum," meaning command, order, or commission.

“I Don’t Want to Raise Church Kids”

There’s a BIG difference between being a church-goer and a true Christian. Growing up in church can certainly have its perks, as it can act as a conduit by which you get to know and experience the love of Jesus.

But as Sherry, a blogger at The Messy Christian, knows all too well, the church can also act as a false representation of God if we get caught up in the wrong things.

When we get more focused on the formulaic act of a church service, like singing the songs and reciting the prayers, the piercing and all-consuming love of Christ can get lost to the tune of “Our God Is an Awesome God.”

It can also lead us to believe that God is trapped within four stained-glass walls rather than an omnipresent father that penetrates through every aspect of our lives.

In a Facebook post entitled “I don’t want to raise church kids,” Sherry opens our eyes to the fact that it’s way more important to raise Jesus kids than church kids, and she is totally SPOT ON.

Read Sherry’s viral post below:

“I don’t want to raise church kids.

That’s right.

I DO NOT want to raise church kids.

Matter of fact, it’s one of my biggest fears.

That they would go to church every week of their lives and never experience what the whole purpose of [what] church is really about.

That they would come and learn about God, but never actually seek and find Him for themselves.

That they would come and learn the stories of the Bible, but never realize that they too are a Bible story waiting to happen. That their life is woven into the tapestry of life that God has created and that they are here for a greater purpose.

That they would think that God is kept inside four walls.

That they would sing the songs but never have more than a shallow appreciation for the words they sing. That those words, written by sinners turned saints by the blood of Jesus, would never penetrate their heart.

That they would sing of the light, but never know the light.

That they would hear about grace, but never know how desperately they need it.

That they would learn about mercy, but never know the One who bestows it.

That they would think worship is something that just happens on Sunday mornings and not every minute of their life.

That they would just up and walk away from church one day and never return.
