Kristen Bell on Why the Kissing Scene in Snow White Is Dangerous for Our Daughters

“I look at my child’s brain like a hungry stomach — I have to feed it every day,” she said. “Even if I’m rushed, I have to feed their brain just like I feed their belly.”

After reading “Snow White” to her girls, Bell asks them, “Don’t you think that it’s weird that the prince kisses Snow White without her permission? Because you cannot kiss someone if they’re sleeping!”

Bell’s issue with the unconsented kiss is along the lines of a previous claim by Osaka University professor, Kazue Muta that the princes in both “Sleeping Beauty” and “Snow White” inappropriately portray “sexual acts on an unconscious partner.”

Bell also voiced concerns about the part of the Disney film where the princess eats a poisonous apple given to her by a witch.

“Everytime we close ‘Snow White’ I look at my girls and ask ‘Don’t you think it’s weird that Snow White didn’t ask the old witch why she needed to eat the apple? Or where she got the apple?'” she told People. “I say, ‘I would never take food from a stranger, would you?’ And my kids are like, ‘No!’ And I’m like, ‘OK, I’m doing something right.'”

What are your thoughts on Kristen Bell’s stance? Is “Snow White” sending the wrong message to our daughters about consent, or is it merely an innocent fairytale?

We’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments!
