Thanks to a few fast-acting Good Samaritans and first responders, a mother, her son and their dog were rescued from a potentially deadly situation this past weekend when their 2014 Dodge Ram hit a rail and dove straight into the water.
According to 87-year-old Mary Watkins, her son’s medical boot got stuck on the accelerator in Long Beach, thus causing them to drive straight through the guardrail fence and into a marina.
A bystander captured the rescue footage that has since been posted to Facebook.

“I don’t want to sound philosophical, but you know what’s going to happen while it’s happening,” Watkins told the Long Beach Post.
The kind strangers who jumped into the water to save the family and dog all did so without even breaking a single window.
“No sooner did I hop in the water and the lifeguard captain was handing over the older lady to me,” Jeff Perez told CBS Los Angeles.
According to the Long Beach Fire Department, no one was taken to the hospital after the accident.
“LBFD Lifeguard units responded to reports of a submerged vehicle just after [1 p.m.] today,” wrote the Long Beach Fire Department in a tweet. “Lifeguard and vessel assist personnel arrived and made water entry and extricated an elderly couple from the vehicle. [The] couple was treated on scene and released. Accident under investigation.”
