Teen Plane Crash Survivor Brings America to Tears & Simon to His Feet With Breathtaking Performance

Each person that takes to the America’s Got Talent stage has a story to tell. It’s what makes the show more than just a talent competition because it allows viewers and judges alike to feel compassion for each contestant. We feel something with each story that is told from the AGT stage, and we want to experience more.

That’s how I felt watching 28-year-old Kechi perform this week. After a plane crash in 2005 left 107 passengers dead, Kechi was one of only two survivors. She was just 16 years old.

She explained to Simon that even though she’d been singing since she was a young girl, it was after the plane crash that music became something more for her. It was a lifeline.

“Lying in the hospital bed, unable to move—music was my escape,” she says. “It did so much for me.”

Kechi had more than 100 surgeries to repair her damaged skin and body. But not even a fatal plane crash could keep her from sharing her story and her voice with the world.

How’s that for a battle cry?

The singer performed Ed Sheeran’s “Thinking Out Loud.” And as if her incredibly story hadn’t already given everyone goosebumps, her singing voice gave us ALL. THE. FEELS.

Kechi’s bravery and perseverance is beyond inspiring. It’s people like her who prove that anything is possible.

She’s still writing her story, and I can’t wait to see where the talent competition takes this beautiful survivor.
