Tim Tebow is on a mission to redefine Valentine’s Day, and it’s pretty spectacular. Turns out, it’s something he’s been dreaming up since he was just 15-years-old.
Last year, the Tim Tebow Foundation launched “Night to Shine,” a prom night for people with special needs held during Valentine’s Day weekend. The foundation says it’s goal for Night to Shine is to provide “an unforgettable prom night experience, centered on God’s love, for people with special needs at host churches across the country.”
Last year, the event was a huge success with 44 churches in 26 states and 3 countries participating. And it’s about to get bigger—WAY bigger!
Over 15,000 volunteers got together to honor 7,000 special needs guests. They got their hair and make-up done, shoes shined, and were fed like kings and queens as they were led out onto the exquisite dance floor. There were even red carpets, limos, paparazzi—and the whole shebang!
Tim Tebow wanted to make sure these ladies and gents felt like royalty, and I’d say he did a mighty fine job!
He even got in the action himself by flying to a couple locations to surprise guests and help shine their shoes.
Check out the beautiful date he escorted down the red carpet at one of the proms. You just know she feels like a MILLION bucks!!
And that was exactly what he was hoping for.
“Tonight, our number 1 goal is to make you feel like kings and queens,” he said in opening the 2015 event. “But to be honest with you, every moment of your life, God looks at you like you’re a king or a queen.”
And this year, Tebow is upping the ante and STOKED about it! He’s excited to announce that Night to Shine will have a 450% increase since last year.
“Every time I think about it, I’m so humbled and amazed by the way God has continued to grow Night to Shine,” he told PEOPLE. “I can’t wait for February 12th; it’s my favorite night of the year.”
His foundation will be helping to equip, fund and organize a whopping 200 proms this year!
The executive director of the Tim Tebow Foundation, Erik Dellenback, says,”We hope that the movement of Night to Shine not only transforms the way we think about Valentine’s Day, but also launches or enhances ongoing special needs ministries within churches around the world.”
And on top of redefining Valentine’s Day as a day that makes every one feel special and uniquely loved, Tebow says this fulfills a dream he’s had since he was a teen.
“When I was 15 years old, I began to realize the importance of fighting for people who can’t fight for themselves,” he said. “As a foundation, we are so passionate about people with special needs, and this event is a great time to tell them how much they are loved by God and by all of us.”
What a word. Seriously, as though we needed another reason to love Tim Tebow. This astounding gesture is enough to sweep anybody off of their feet!
I hope all of these special guys and gals have the most amazing Valentine’s Day, knowing it’s not all about finding romance on earth, but feeling loved by the God who made them kings & queens long before they could even fit their crown. ♥
