Jamie Acord had been to the same beach countless times, so she never thought she’d be a woman swallowed by quicksand. But that’s just what happened when she and her husband were taking a walk on a beach in Maine.
“Literally it was kind of like I just dropped into a manhole,” Acord told PEOPLE.
Woman Swallowed by Quicksand Had Been to This Beach Many Times
Acord and her husband were enjoying yet another day at Popham Beach State Park in Phippsburg, Maine, when the day took an unexpected turn. While the two were walking along the shore, Acord dropped waist-deep into the sand.
“We were walking along, just talking, and all of a sudden I went into the sand,” she said.
It happened so fast. “I just dropped like a rock, she said to WCSH. “I was there and then the next minute I wasn’t”
She turned to her husband and said, “I can’t get out,” Acord told the Associated Press.
Her husband quickly went to work and the two were able to get Acord out of the sand. Her life was never in danger. At the worst, she was waist-deep in the sand. Acord was okay—she only had a few scrapes from the sand.

She was shocked by the ordeal. “It was kind of one of those moments where I didn’t know what to do. This is a new thing that’s never happened before,” she told PEOPLE. “And I go to that beach all the time.”
After Acord was out of the sand, she and her husband looked around to see what had happened. They assumed she had fallen into an actual hole in the sand. But, that wasn’t the case. “There was nothing there,” Acord recalled. “It looked just like the beach. It had filled itself right back in.”
After Acord and her husband were back to safety, she remembered changing out of her clothes that were covered in “wet-cement-like sand.”
Acord took to social media to share her experience and to warn others of this real-life occurrence. “If the beach is clearing out, there’s only one or two people on the beach and you fall in something like that and you don’t know what to do or you can’t get out, you’re kind of stuck,” she said.
