As a parent, some of the best Saturday afternoons are when you can ship your kids off to a birthday party for a couple of hours and run some errands in peace.
But for this Sacramento mother of three, the birthday party her kids were at last Saturday was anything but peaceful.
Carrie Joe brought her kids to a birthday party to celebrate one of their friends. Shortly after arriving though, an argument broke out and bullets began to fly.
That’s when Carrie’s 11-year-old son did the unthinkable. He ran right through the line of danger and “shielded” his two-year-old sister’s body on the ground. He was struck by three bullets in the process—one flew across his back, and another went in and out of his chest.

He was transferred to a nearby hospital and underwent immediate surgery to treat the wounds, resulting in the removal of his appendix and kidney. Unbelievably, he’s expected to make a full recovery.
The incident was a low blow for Carrie, who told a local news station that she and her children have been living homeless for the past five months. She says that alone has been “really hard,” and the constant struggle of providing food and clothing for her family has been difficult.
