In a nation marked by privilege and freedom, it’s often easy for us to forget the problems plaguing our world every single day.

That little girl in the video above isn’t much different than your daughter. One minute, she was happily celebrating her 9th birthday, twirling on a merry-go-round and painting her pout with mommy’s red lipstick—kind of like any child living the American dream.

And the next, she was fighting for her life.

Just because it isn’t happening here, doesn’t mean it isn’t happening.

There is no end in sight for the Syrian war. BBC has called this crisis a ‘global failure’ to protect refugees. More than 470,000 people have been killed since an uprising against President Bashar al-Assad erupted in March 2011. According to World Vision, there are 5.1 million Syrian refugees, and 6.3 million are displaced within Syria; half of those affected are children.

Who will protect these people? Who will be their neighbor?
