Country Singer Granger Smith Reveals “Unthinkable News” After 3-Year-Old Son Dies in Tragic Accident

There are few tragedies as devastating or grievous as the loss of a child.

In a heart-wrenching Instagram post shared this afternoon, country singer Granger Smith revealed that his 3-year-old son, River Kelly Smith, has died as the result of a tragic accident.

“I have to deliver unthinkable news,” wrote Smith. “We’ve lost our youngest son, River Kelly Smith. Following a tragic accident, and despite doctors’ best efforts, he was unable to be revived. Amber and I made the decision to say our last goodbyes and donate his organs so that other children will be given a second chance at life.”

Though the Smiths are gutted over the unfathomable loss of their precious little boy, they take comfort in knowing he’s now in the arms of God.

I have to deliver unthinkable news. We’ve lost our youngest son, River Kelly Smith. Following a tragic accident, and despite doctor’s best efforts, he was unable to be revived. Amber and I made the decision to say our last goodbyes and donate his organs so that other children will be given a second chance at life. Our family is devastated and heartbroken, but we take solace in knowing he is with his Heavenly Father. Riv was special. Everyone that met him knew that immediately. The joy he brought to our lives cannot be expressed and his light will be forever in our hearts. If there are words to say more, I cannot find them in this moment. Love the ones close to you. There has never been a more difficult moment for us than this. . . In lieu of flowers or gifts, please send donations to Dell Children’s Medical Center in River’s name. The doctors, nurses and staff have been incredible.

While every little life that enters this world is a gift, Riv was an undeniably special boy who changed anyone he encountered for the better.

“Riv was special. Everyone that met him knew that immediately. The joy he brought to our lives cannot be expressed and his light will be forever in our hearts.”

“If there are words to say more, I cannot find them in this moment,” wrote the heartbroken father. “Love the ones close to you. There has never been a more difficult moment for us than this.”

Granger’s wife Amber posted the same heavy-hearted status on her own Instagram, adding “Nothing can prepare a mother to deliver this kind of news.”

In lieu of flowers, the Smiths ask that donations be sent to Dell Children’s Medical Center in River’s name.

Please join us in praying for the Smiths during this time of unthinkable loss as they grieve the death of their beloved River. May this sweet boy rest peacefully in the arms of Jesus.
