An Open Letter to Ex: ‘I’ve Finally Gotten My Confidence Back’

At the base of our greatest fears lies this one: “I am not good enough.” So many of our actions, reactions, and perceptions are born out of this lie that has plagued the human race since the beginning of time—especially girls. At these moments, we want to write an open letter to ex — and move on. But, it’s not always that simple.

We all hear the cliche “be unique,” “just be you,” and all that jazz, but honestly, when people pick out our flaws, it still cuts like a knife.

Brittaney Lynn Shane knows that all too well. Her boyfriend used to nitpick every little thing he could about her, calling her “ridiculous, tacky, and ugly”…and more. From the length of her hair to the size of her waist, she let him dictate who she was.

Even after she did all she could to please him, her boyfriend left her for a “prettier” girl. Brittaney blamed herself at first, but then something gave her a little perspective—and it is lighting up the Internet in the best way.

She decided to write an eye-opening letter to her boyfriend on Facebook, and it’s pretty darn amazing. Read the powerful words of her viral post here, along with the snapshots that tell her story:

“You always told me I didn’t look good with long hair and that you preferred girls with short hair.”
