Avril Lavigne Releases Official Video for New Worship Song—& Every Christian Needs to See It

After taking a five-year hiatus, many conspiracy theories about the whereabouts of Avril Lavigne have been circling the Internet. But it has actually been the pop singer’s battle with Lyme disease that has kept her out of the music limelight.

Recently, however, Lavigne released a hit single that brings to light the battles she’s been facing and how they’ve thrust her into the arms of God.

“One night, I thought I was dying, and I had accepted that I was going to die,” said Lavigne. “My mom laid with me in bed and held me. I felt like I was drowning. Under my breath, I prayed ‘God, please help to keep my head above the water.’ In that moment, the [songwriting] of this album began. It was like I tapped into something. It was a very spiritual experience. Lyrics flooded through me from that point on.”

Out of that experience came “Head Above Water,” a beautiful worship song detailing her struggles and newfound relationship with God.

The chorus reads, “God, keep my head above water / Don’t let me drown, it gets harder / I’ll meet you there at the altar / As I fall down to my knees / Don’t let me drown, drown, drown.”

On her birthday, Lavigne released the official music video for the hit song that has already received over 10 million views in a week.

From the jeweled cross around her neck to the cross form her dress takes when walking toward the water, the video is vividly filled with Christian imagery.

In a tweet to her co-writers late last month, Lavigne thanked Travis Clark and Stephan Moccio for their work on the track, saying “I know God brought you to me.”
