Couple Celebrates 70th Wedding Anniversary, Shares Their Secrets to a Long and Happy Marriage

The story of Doreen and Harold Lesage is a testament to the enduring power of love and commitment. Earlier this month, the couple from Garden River, Ontario, celebrated an incredible milestone—70 years of marriage—with 200 friends and family members joining them for a heartwarming celebration on August 10.

The couple’s journey began long before they said, “I do.” Both Doreen and Harold grew up in Garden River, and their families were close. Reflecting on their early years, Doreen fondly recalled, “We knew there was a connection early on.” Their relationship blossomed through simple, shared moments—Harold would invite Doreen to movies and shows in town. “A couple of years into dating, we were walking by Whalen’s Jewellers in the Sault, and he asked if he could buy me a ring. It was like a friendship ring,” she shared with a smile.

On August 10, 1954, they officially began their journey as husband and wife. Five years into their marriage, they built their home together—a house that has been filled with memories, laughter, and love for the past seven decades.

When asked about the secret to their long-lasting marriage, Doreen offered some sage advice: “Understanding each other. There’s no need to argue. Yesterday’s gone by; you’ll never have that back again. Don’t dwell on things of the past, look for the future for better things.” A sense of humor, she added, is also crucial. She shared a humorous anecdote about their Alexa device at home. “Harold would speak to it, and I’d joke that it made me jealous. I was never jealous of your dad all these years, and now all I hear is ‘Alexa, Alexa,’” she laughed.

For Harold, the joy of their marriage has been amplified by the family they’ve built together. With five children, 19 grandchildren, and 19 great-grandchildren, their legacy is one of love and unity. “Who can ask for anything more?” Harold said. “No millionaire can say that. I don’t have the million, but I have many thanks for each one of them kids. They love one another, they get along, and they build their own homes, which makes me proud of them.”

A cherished family tradition that has brought the Lesage family even closer over the years is their Saturday morning breakfasts. For the past decade, the family members who live nearby have gathered every Saturday to share a meal—a simple yet profound way to stay connected and celebrate their bond.

As they look back on 70 years of marriage, Doreen and Harold’s story is a beautiful reminder that love, understanding, and a good sense of humor are the keys to a long, fulfilling relationship. Their journey together is an inspiration, not just to their family, but to anyone who believes in the power of enduring love.
