Texas Woman Arrested After Trying to Buy a Baby in a Walmart

Of all the things one would want to buy in a Walmart, a baby is not normally on anyone’s list. Apparently, it is on someone’s list, however. News stories are popping up all over about the Texas woman arrested for just that—on January 13th, she had been trying to buy a baby from another customer in her hometown Walmart.

What’s the Story Behind the Texas Woman Arrested?

Crockett, Texas is the setting of this shocking scene. it’s on the east side of Texas, relatively similar distances between Houston, Dallas, and Austin, but it’s technically in Houston County. Crockett is about 2 hours from the city of Houston. It’s a small town with a population reported in 2010 as 6,950. Small town or not, baby buying is definitely not the norm in Crockett. That’s why one local woman, who is unidentified, was so surprised when Rebecca Lanette Taylor, who is 49 years old, approached her at the Walmart self-checkout and offered up to $500,000 for her infant son.

News stories about the Texas woman arrested posted to Facebook, like the one above, went viral, with thousands upon thousands of reactions in a matter of days.

Many commenters chalked up Taylor’s attempt at trying to buy a baby to mental health issues or wondered if the woman had been joking, but others worried the woman had been tracking that specific family.

Facebook user, Brooke Alexis said, “This lady did her research too…she knew all about the child before approaching the mom, and ‘investigators’ are trying to find out why, and how…please keep your kids safe, and pull them a little closer!”

Many commenters wondered if the Texas woman arrested is involved in a trafficking ring, given the amount of cash she said she had in her possession. Facebook user, Sheryl Payne said, “I hope they examine her for potentially being part of a network.”

Another commenter shared another link with Facebook, claiming that Taylor is from Norway and said, “[Norway] is highly known for human trafficking and it would not surprise me if that’s what this was for, or she’s just mentally ill.”

Whatever is behind this woman’s actions, she was persistent at trying to buy a baby…
