Disabled Man Cries After Being Told He Will Be Euthanized Against His Will

Forty-two-year-old Vincent Lambert has been in a partially vegetative state since being injured in a car accident back in 2008.

Though the former nurse is fully capable of breathing on his own without the help of machines, the French courts have ruled that Lambert is to be euthanized through starvation, as he does require medical assistance for nutrition and fluids.

France’s top court made the decision last week, overturning a prior court order from May that forced doctors to keep Lambert alive just 12 hours after they shut off his life support against his wishes.

The patient’s parents intend to press murder charges if their son’s life support is halted.

“In May, when learning about his planned death, he cried,” said his mother, Viviane.

She told Reuters that she went to United Nations Committee of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities to make the case that her son is being discriminated against because the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities “prohibits depriving a person of food and drink.”

Viviane is supported by her husband and two of their children, while Lambert’s remaining six siblings and his wife Rachel would like to end his life.

“I beg you, help us,” Viviane pleaded with the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva. “Without your intervention, my son, Vincent Lambert, will be euthanized because of his mental handicap.”

The case has rekindled a heated debate over France’s right-to-die laws which allow for ‘passive euthanasia’ if there’s no hope for the patient’s recovery.

Even Pope Francis has weighed in on the controversial issue.

“Let us pray for those who live in a state of severe disability,” he tweeted. “Let us always protect life, God’s gift, from beginning to natural end. Let’s not give in to the cultivation of waste.”

President of Terri Schiavo Life and Hope Network, Bobby Schindler, also spoke out regarding the absurd ruling he called “a crime against common sense.”

“Vincent is being killed by the French state, and this killing is intentionally being caused by a denial of food and water,” said Schindler. “If we treated any other disabled person this way, it would be rightly seen as an outrageous injustice.”

“We have to awaken the consciences of our brothers and sisters to recognize the humanity and dignity of Vincent Lambert and those like him,” he added. “Lives are literally at stake.”
