Balancing Family Life with Public Life
Despite her traditional lifestyle, Neeleman’s life took an unconventional turn when she continued competing in beauty pageants after becoming a wife and mother. She was crowned Mrs. American in August 2023 and soon after found herself preparing for the Mrs. World competition in Las Vegas, just twelve days postpartum. This experience showcased her determination and ability to balance her family life with public responsibilities.
Postpartum Pageantry
While pregnant with her eighth child, Hannah Neeleman prepared rigorously for the pageant. After giving birth to her daughter, Flora, in early January 2024, Neeleman faced physical challenges that would daunt most. However, with the support of her husband and family, she managed to step onto the Mrs. World stage in Las Vegas, just twelve days postpartum with her eighth child.

Her participation sparked significant online discussion, with some viewing it as the ultimate act of empowerment and others as a demonstration of oppression. Regardless of differing opinions, Neeleman’s actions highlighted the complexities and multifaceted nature of the modern Trad Wife.
The Broader Impact of the Trad Wife Movement
While Hannah Neeleman is a prominent figure, the Trad Wife movement encompasses women from diverse backgrounds and experiences. This movement has sparked significant debate, particularly around issues of gender roles, feminism, and personal choice.
In a recent New York Times interview, Neeleman, who has never used the term Trad Wife, nor does she identify with it, shared her views on feminism:
“There’s so many different ways you could take that word. I don’t even know what feminism means any more,” she says of being a feminist. “We try so hard to be neutral and be ourselves and people will put a label on everything. This is just our normal life.”
Feminist Critiques and Support
The Trad Wife movement has faced criticism from some feminist circles, which argue that it reinforces outdated and restrictive gender roles. Critics contend that promoting a return to traditional homemaking can limit women’s opportunities and perpetuate inequality.
However, many Trad Wives, including Neeleman, view their choice as a form of empowerment. They argue that true feminism should support a woman’s right to choose her path, whether that involves a career, homemaking, or a combination of both. For these women, the decision to focus on their families and homes is deliberate and fulfilling.
