Amidst the hate, negativity, and violence that has engulfed our nation in recent months in the wake of George’s Floyd’s brutal murder, it’s beautiful to witness moments of love and unity—like the one shared by Lewis Monique on Facebook last Friday.
Prefacing her message in saying, “I don’t normally share moments [like these],” Lewis went on to share an emotional 5-minute video testimony in her car about the way her ‘blessing’ came full circle in a way she had never imagined. And it happened purely by listening to the prompting of God’s voice.
Just the night prior, she had posted a video of a biracial toddler walking around at a festival, “hugging everybody of every race and ethnicity, of every color.”
The New Orleans police officer thought to herself, “This is what America is. This is what America should look like.”
Reflecting on a statement she has hanging in her bathroom that reads, “Be the change you wanna see,” Lewis felt prompted to share the video on her page with a caption that encouraged others to hug the next person they saw of another skin color or ethnicity.
“Or give them a nice gesture, or a compliment, and be the change that you wanna see,” she added. “Racism is taught, just like love is taught.”
The officer then rushed home that morning to get ready for her regular shift when she realized she had low gas in the car. Though hesitant to make a stop for fuel since she was already running late, Lewis decided to pull over.
“Ma’am can I ask you something,” a caucasian taxi driver, who appeared to be about her same age, asked her while he was alongside her pumping gas. “Can I pray for you?”
Though feeling scorched by the early morning heat and rushed to get to work, the young police officer paused and replied, “Sure, of course, there’s never enough prayer. “
