Amidst the hate, negativity, and violence that has engulfed our nation in recent months in the wake of George’s Floyd’s brutal murder, it’s beautiful to witness moments of love and unity—like the one shared by Lewis Monique on Facebook last Friday.
Prefacing her message in saying, “I don’t normally share moments [like these],” Lewis went on to share an emotional 5-minute video testimony in her car about the way her ‘blessing’ came full circle in a way she had never imagined. And it happened purely by listening to the prompting of God’s voice.
Just the night prior, she had posted a video of a biracial toddler walking around at a festival, “hugging everybody of every race and ethnicity, of every color.”
The New Orleans police officer thought to herself, “This is what America is. This is what America should look like.”
Reflecting on a statement she has hanging in her bathroom that reads, “Be the change you wanna see,” Lewis felt prompted to share the video on her page with a caption that encouraged others to hug the next person they saw of another skin color or ethnicity.
“Or give them a nice gesture, or a compliment, and be the change that you wanna see,” she added. “Racism is taught, just like love is taught.”
The officer then rushed home that morning to get ready for her regular shift when she realized she had low gas in the car. Though hesitant to make a stop for fuel since she was already running late, Lewis decided to pull over.
“Ma’am can I ask you something,” a caucasian taxi driver, who appeared to be about her same age, asked her while he was alongside her pumping gas. “Can I pray for you?”
Though feeling scorched by the early morning heat and rushed to get to work, the young police officer paused and replied, “Sure, of course, there’s never enough prayer. “
The young man explained that his sister is a police officer in New Orleans and he understands what’s going on with all the racial tension and hate toward police officers remarking, “it shouldn’t be that way.”
“I just wanna cover you,” he added with sincerity.
“Immediately I got chills. This young man prayed over me, and I got chills IMMEDIATELY,” Lewis reiterated.
“I gave him a hug, even [with] the COVID-19 because I realized that God was working,” she continued through a stream of tears.
“God spoke to me last night and I shared that video. He spoke to me. He showed me how the power of tongue and prayer, and I was being the example that I wanna see.”
Lewis immediately realized how her small act came right back to bless her immensely:
“And it came right back to me, fold. I didn’t see it coming. I wasn’t gonna get gas. I was gonna drive all the way to work with low mileage, but I stopped there. And if I didn’t stop there, I would’ve missed my blessing. That was that same prayer that I put out 2-something this morning, it came right back to me, 6 hours later, so be mindful what you pray on.”
“When your heart is pure, your blessings always turns right back around at you,” she added.
Lewis’ moving testimony has since been viewed over 5 million times and shared by thousands who have been touched by her sweet story. Watch in full below:
