It’s because Jessica listened to that inner prompt to not leave that she saved the old man’s life. And many recognize her as a hero.

One commenter said, “Please don’t say that you are ‘just an instacart worker’ that makes it sound like your job isn’t important. You are important. And you are amazing.”

According to Jessica, she decided to message the daughter before closing out the order since you cannot message a customer after the order is closed.

“I was very concerned for her dad that he just looked sick,” Jessica explained.

Here is the message, as explained by Jessica: “It’s very unprofessional of me to say something. And I wasn’t going to. I never talk. I always just put the groceries down and leave. But this time, I–for whatever in my head–I was like, you gotta say something, you gotta say something, Jess. So I said, he’s not doing good. He’s sick. There’s a propane tank in there. I was in there maybe five feet and I got dizzy. And I said there’s gotta be a leak. And I was like he might not be doing good because of this leak.”

The next day, Jessica learned that what she did by breaking Instacart protocol and contacting the daughter saved both her dad’s and her younger son’s life. The woman had given Jessica Higgs a five-star review on January 31, 2022 that said, “Thank you so much, once my son went to check on my dad it turned out it definitely was leaking, you definitely saved my dad and my younger son’s life!!!”

When the daughter learned the extra act of service Jessica Higgs had done, she also changed her tip to $100.

Jessica ended her video by saying, “I’m just an instacart worker, but if you see something, say something, and I did and I’m so happy I did and I’m so happy that he can live a better life.”
