Martha Plimpton is best known for her roles in television shows like The Goonies and The Real O’Neils, but recently she made headlines for a much more disturbing reason.
A video shot in June at the Seattle #ShoutYourAbortion event is just starting to gain widespread attention after it was released online.
Plimpton, who attended the same event in March of 2016 adorned in an “abortion” dress stamped with hearts, made no less of a statement at this year’s event—but this time with her distasteful remarks.
The actress not only praised her multiple abortions, but hailed the one she had in Seattle her “best one”:
“Seattle has some particular significance for me for lots of reasons. I’ve got a lot of family here, some of whom are here in the audience tonight. I also had my first abortion here at the Seattle Planned Parenthood! Yay!
Notice I said ‘first’…and I don’t want Seattle—I don’t want you guys to feel insecure, it was my best one. Heads and tails above the rest. If I could Yelp review it, I totally would.”
“And if that doctor’s here tonight, I don’t remember you at all, I was 19,” she added as the crowd roared in laughter and applause. “I was 19, but I thank you nonetheless. You probably won’t remember because I wasn’t that famous then.”
And it seems her irreverence for the unborn is backfiring, perhaps making her even less famous than she was as a teen before she hit the big screen.
Twitter users were not NEARLY as amused by her playful advocacy for baby killing.
Martha Plimpton went on to insult pro-lifers, saying they’re “not the brightest bulbs that we’re dealing with here.”
Other statements made at the event were equally unsettling.
Dr. Willie Parker (an abortion doctor who uses Christianity to justify his job), remarked, “I’ve never killed a baby. I’ve ended pregnancies, but I’ve never killed a baby.” In his recently released book Life’s Work: A Moral Argument for Choice, Parker argues that he is ultimately “blessing women” by helping them make “sacred decisions.”
But amidst the #ShoutYourAbortion nonsense, another group of individuals is coming together to shout truth.
While many women are celebrating how abortion made their lives better on social media, there are others who are joining forces under the popular hashtag to share how abortion negatively impacted them and their families.
“My mother aborted me,” wrote Twitter user @andieiamwhoiam. “I survived. Childhood was Hell but I overcame. Her regret led to suicide. Don’t do it. Life matters.”
Others tweeted equally haunting experiences, as well as ways that they plan to honor their future children by “speaking TRUTH”:
A Facebook page titled “Shout Your Abortion-Regret” has also been launched as a safe space for women to share their stories and post-abortion experiences.
“It was two years before I learned about basic #fetal development, and realized that my child wasn’t just a puddle of liquid,” shared a woman named Bonnie. “He looked exactly like the baby in this picture, before he was torn apart, limb by limb by the abortionist. Devastation and regret don’t even come close to describing the feeling I had when I realized I had been lied to. Had I been given the #truth, by anyone, I would have fought with my life for my child and never allowed him to be #killed…”
In a culture with an ever-increasing propensity to “do what’s best for you” regardless of the consequences, I’m so thankful for brave women like this who are willing to speak out without shame for the LIFE that deserves a chance to be loved.
