Working the drive-thru window, Pedro Viloria is no stranger to seeing crazy things. I’d be lying if I said I’ve never gone through the drive-thru in my pajamas before. But Tuesday was different.
During his breakfast shift at a Miami-area McDonald’s, Pedro encountered an off-duty police officer who was buying food with her kids.
As she approached his window, Pedro could tell that something was wrong. The officer was struggling to breathe.
“I see she’s like inflating her neck, like trying to breathe, like ‘ahh,’ and basically I thought something was going wrong,” he said.
And that wasn’t his only indicator. Soon, he heard her kids screaming frantically from the backseat.
“Her kids were screaming, ‘Mother, mother stop it! Mother, what are you doing?'” explained Pedro.
That’s when things took a scary turn. The woman’s foot slipped off her brake pedal and her vehicle began rolling away. Pedro immediately jumped into action and dove out the window as the woman lost consciousness. McDonald’s camera footage caught the quick-thinking hero in action.
“I ran as fast as I could, put myself in front of the car,” he told NBC Miami.
Her car just barely missed another vehicle before hitting a curb. Pedro immediately urged the kids to call 911 after getting the vehicle to a safe stop. Little did they know, as they made the call, a fast-acting firefighter caught wind of the emergency from inside the restaurant, and he rushed out with his partner to help.
Pedro calmed the kids down as the paramedics used CPR and a defibrillator to revive the woman.
Thanks to his quick thinking as well as the assistance of these selfless men, the officer survived! God truly placed this courageous young man in the right place at the right time to save this helpless mother and her sweet children.
