Tom Brady on Why Super Bowl Rings Will Never Fill the Void Inside Him: “I Think, God, It’s Gotta Be More Than This”

Tom Brady already owns so many Super Bowl rings that he hardly has enough fingers to fit them on—and now, he’s done it again after claiming victory over Super Bowl LV on Sunday night, his first win with the Buccaneers.

Seeing the famed Brady celebrated for his supreme football talent that defies age certainly has prompted the public to reflect on a history that has earned him 7 Super Bowl rings and 5 Super Bowl MVPs… particularly the record-breaking Bowl of 2017.

The big game between the New England Patriots and the Atlanta Falcons that year may have been one of the greatest Super Bowls of all time. If not one of the greatest, it was the most record-shattering and unforgettable night for the then-New England quarterback, Tom Brady.

Brady played his record-breaking seventh Super Bowl with the Patriots, who beat the Falcons with the largest Super Bowl comeback in the game’s 51-year history. And to top it all off, the Patriots’ comeback led to the first-ever Super Bowl overtime.

Patriots and Falcons fans alike were in disbelief over what happened that night. But no one could be more proud than Galynn Brady—both then, and still today.

Tom Brady’s mother had to sit out the 2016 NFL season due to illness. Having undergone chemotherapy treatments that whole year, it was unclear if the quarterback’s biggest fan would be able to make the trip in her fragile state.

But Galynn rallied, and this proud mama made it to her son’s game. She was all smiles.

“All I did was pray, the whole game, just pray,” said the proud mama.

Thankfully, shortly after Super Bowl LI, the Brady family received amazing news: Galynn was cancer-free! And she still is, for three years and counting.

Before New England took to the field for Super Bowl LI, Patriots owner Robert Kraft had a chat with the MVP:

Even he knew that this win was much bigger than fame or football for Brady. Many years ago, the rising NFL star made it clear that simply winning Super Bowls would never fill the void inside of him.

“Why do I have 3 Super Bowl rings and still think there’s something greater out there for me?” Brady questioned in a 60 Minutes interview.

“I mean maybe a lot of people would say, ‘Hey man, this is what it is. I reached my goal, my dream.'”

“Me, I think, God, it’s gotta be more than this.”

Early on, he discovered a Super Bowl ring couldn’t fulfill his deepest desires.

Winning for his mom would have been more than enough motivation, but the quarterback added that he was inspired by “all the girls in my life.”

“My wife, my mom, my sisters, my daughter, my nieces—they’re all here,” he continued. “So it’s just so special.”

Though he’s surrounded by mostly ladies, there’s one monumental man in his life he can’t leave out.

“Well, I think my dad is my hero,” said Brady. “Because he’s someone I look up to every day.”

America may define the legend that is Tom Brady by football, but for him, family will forever outshine those Super Bowl rings.
