Megan Warfield, a Pregnant Firefighter, Survives Crash and Rescues Others

Who doesn’t love a hero story? But, rarely is the hero of the story nine months pregnant. That was the case for Megan Warfield who was just weeks away from her due date. Warfield served as a firefighter and first responder for many years, and being pregnant didn’t stop her rescuing instincts.

Warfield was involved in a multi-car accident in Maryland. Seeing the gravity of the situation, and with plenty of training as a first responder, Warfield jumped into action. Despite contractions, Warfield was intent on helping others.

She focused on helping a woman trapped in an overturned vehicle. Warfield explained, in an interview on the TODAY Show that, after the accident, she got out of her car to help direct traffic. It was then that Warfield spotted the overturned car—and someone trapped inside.

“I started to climb in there with her, but then I was like, ‘What are you doing? You’re nine months pregnant,’” Warfield mentioned during the interview. “I ended up holding onto her to keep her in place because I wasn’t sure of her injuries at the time.

“It was also important that I keep her calm,” added Warfield. “It was a pretty traumatic event.”

It wasn’t long after paramedics arrived that Warfield agreed to go to the hospital for evaluation—of her and her unborn child. Warfield was in active labor, and her daughter, Charlotte, was born a day later.

Her employer was one of the first to congratulate Megan Warfield

Warfield’s employer, Bowleys Quarters Volunteer Fire Rescue & Marine (BQVFD), posted a tribute to her and her heroic efforts that day.

The post recounted the rescue efforts. “Just a week or so shy of her due date, Megan had just finished organizing and hosting her late father’s 2nd annual memorial golf tournament when she was involved in a significant motor vehicle collision.”

“Ignoring any chance she could be injured, Megan immediately exited her mangled vehicle and began providing care to a person trapped by their overturned car. Megan stayed with this patient until Squad 213 arrived to free the victim. After all patients were evaluated, Megan agreed to an evaluation herself.”

“Less then 24 hours later, Megan delivered her beautiful baby girl. Since no good deed should go unrecognized, we wanted to highlight Megan’s heroic and selfess actions. Congratulations Momma Megan, Job Well Done!”

With nearly 2,000 reactions and hundreds of comments, people in their community and around the country are singing Warfield’s praises.
