My husband and I have known each other since we were nineteen, and I’d be lying if I said our relationship hadn’t changed since then. I mean, I still get butterflies in my belly when he gives me that certain, signature smirk of his, but it’s not like first kiss fireworks when I give him a sleepy smooch nowadays before putting our baby to bed. I think most couples who have been in love for a long time will agree that the passage of years changes their relationship, but one day something crazy happens that shows you just how much the tides have turned.

And this just happened to me.

So it was our day off together, and although I don’t expect my husband to spend every waking moment with baited breath for my next word, I do kinda assume he’ll answer an inquiry when I point it in his direction. I mean, if you ask a question you expect an answer, right?! My, how things change.

So there we were in the same room, and like any sensible person would expect, I figured he would catch my drift when I began speaking to him.

“So what time do you think we should leave?” I asked.

Silence. Silence.

I waited for an answer, but none came. And it was at this point I realized my husband had ignored me. Quite easily, in fact.

As if to nail the point home he suddenly and excitedly said, “ok, listen to this,” while staring down at his phone.

Insert eyeroll.

But it’s at this point I realize my spouse is so enthralled by the Bible he’s reading on his phone, and he starts quoting Leviticus to me. You heard me right, Leviticus!

Y’all, I couldn’t even be mad. My goodness, how things had changed. At nineteen I might have been angry had he ignored me. I might have even been jealous that anything took his attention from me. At that point, and heck, even 5-6 years ago, I might have desired his affections strictly trained to me, with moi as the numero uno of his life, but not now. Instead I was filled with joy. I was happy for how the Lord continued every day to draw my husband, and His child, closer to Himself.

Yes, when seeking the Lord for my spouse I prayed a lot of things. But for many years this had been my main request.

May we continue to grow in relationship as husband and wife, but more importantly may we grow in our relationship with you.

That’s what had really changed. Rather than praying for my husband to be the man I wanted him to be for me, I had prayed that he could be the man God had him to be for His kingdom.

Be careful what you ask for. Lol. Now I had me a man who downright ignored me he was so busy reading the word, but honestly, I can think of no better occupier of his time. I’m honored to stand lovingly beside a man who loves his wife like Christ loves the church, but continues to seek ways to follow Jesus and His example even closer. I am proud to live this life with a partner in parenting who desires to lead his family according to Biblical principles. These things didn’t seem that important to me years ago, but now I understand it’s most important.

I am married to a man who can’t get enough of Jesus, and when he’s not soaking in the word he makes sure to tell me how pretty I am. So really, it’s a win, win.

“I even put together a fake email congratulating them on their win so he had no reason to think anything different!” Kara said.

But in reality, it was all part of Chelsie’s master plan.

“I asked them to write three qualities they admire about each other on the chalk boards,” Kara writes on Facebook. She admits that behind the lens, she was a “nervous mess,” but Will loved the idea and was excited to partake.

A pair of twin babies are making the internet swoon this week after a video captured by their mom shows the heartwarming moment the two brothers “met” each other for the first time. 

Meagan Garr says she was trying to get her 4-month-old sons, Cooper and Olsen, to notice each other. In a viral TikTok video that’s now been viewed over 52 million times, the wedding videographer from Ocala, Florida captured the moment when the boys first recognized their mirror image. 

“I have a friend whose twins are 6 months old and she told me, ‘They just noticed each other.’ I was like, ‘That’s a milestone — what?’” Meagan told TODAY.

Twin Babies First Recognize Each Other

In the video, the boys are laying side-by-side on a pillow. One looks over and takes notice, as the other baby’s eyes come up to meet his. 

The twins begin grinning from ear to ear as they babble, and stare into each other’s eyes with sheer delight! One kicks his legs down in physical excitement, and they share a beautiful moment.

“It was a candid moment, which made my heart so happy,” she says.

Meagan says her twins already interact and react to their older brothers, 6-year-old Jackson and 3-year-old Lucas, but hadn’t acknowledged each other yet. 

“It’s sort of like, ‘You’re my arm, you’re always there,’” she says.

While trying to take photos of the boys smiling at the same time, Meagan looked up to see the twins smiling at each other and was able to catch the whole thing on video. 

The Journey to Twins

When Meagan and her husband first found out they were pregnant, her son Jackson was convinced they were having twins. 

“He said, ‘I want two babies,” says Meagan.

Throughout her first trimester, it became a known talking point, and although Meagan had always wanted a set of twins, she never expected it to become a reality.

When the ultrasound confirmed she was pregnant with fraternal twins, Meagan and her husband were completely *shocked.* 

Cooper and Olsen were born premature at approximately 33 weeks and stayed in the NICU for their first month. Cooper weighed 3 pounds, 14 ounces (and was nicknamed ‘Mini Cooper”) and Olsen weighed five pounds, one ounce.

Meagan says she’s excited for her twins to interact more.

Stanford University Dean Says “Over Parenting” Is Ruining Your Kids

This week, I sat in an auditorium with a couple hundred other parents at my daughter’s high school to hear what author and former freshman dean of Stanford University, Julie Lythcott-Haims, had to say about an epidemic of “over parenting” and the ways that this trend is influencing an entire generation of kids. Lythcott-Haims has experienced the problem firsthand as a college administrator and has written the book How to Raise an Adult: Break Free of the Overparenting Trap and Prepare Your Kid for Success, to document her experience and help parents re-prioritize and refocus.

I found this presentation to be incredibly insightful and I’m excited to share what I learned (it can really be boiled down to two main things which are mentioned at the end). But before I dive into the recap, a little background…

As Julie served as the Dean of Freshman at Stanford, she and her colleagues were astounded as the academic caliber seemed to increase dramatically from one freshman class to the next. “Every batch of freshman is more accomplished than the last” She explained.” Somehow their median GPA is a little higher, their SAT score is a little higher,  they’ve done more APs than ever…they’ve got stories and novels and… Who are these people?” But she also found that their academic success is not the only thing that distinguishes them from previous generations.

She explained that, overall, this generation seems to lack the executive function necessary to make it on their own. Many students don’t make eye contact, don’t interact with teachers, and when they’re lost or need help, they text their mom before advocating for themselves. Julie believes that this is directly correlated with another new development: the behavior of parents.

Never in Stanford’s history have so many freshman parents called in to discuss things like: their student’s roommate situations, teacher complications, opportunities for their student to perform research at the college and even to discuss their child’s grades. Now remember, this isn’t 3rd grade, or 8th grade, or even senior year of high school that she’s talking about. This is COLLEGE and it’s STANFORD UNIVERSITY for crying out loud. Could there possibly be a correlation between these over-parenters and their kids who seem to be floundering in the basic skills of life? Julie is certain of it.

The Problem

The problem, Lythcott-Haims asserts, is “helicopter parenting.” It’s defined by a parent’s will to “engineer” a particular outcome in their child. Julie likens it to the process of sculpting a bonsai tree. If you manicure it the right way (make it take certain classes, ace the right tests and master the most-impressive pastimes) it will become exactly what colleges want to see. I think that most well-intending parents are guilty of a little helicopter parenting from time to time. As I listened to her various examples and quite hysterical true stories that represent this parenting style, I found myself running through my own habits, trying to determine whether I fall into this category.

She mentioned some of her peers that won’t let their 12-year-old attend an age-appropriate movie with a group of friends (without an adult). She talked about the parent that finishes their kid’s school assignment because it might not be worthy of an A on its own. Or the parent who insists that their child FIND THEIR PASSION and then… “Take it off the shelf and show it to the college people.”

She talked about the concierge parents who insist on making little Trevor’s life as comfortable as possible so that he can excel in those areas that really matter…the stuff that shows up on the transcript. But something is continually overlooked by these helicopter moms and dads. It’s not just the grades that matter. It’s not just the extracurriculars. What studies indicate time and time again is that executive function comes from something more. We’ve got to take a step back from this “checklist” approach to parenting and start looking at the “raising” of our kids with the big picture in mind.

The Consequences

This push toward a sort of superhuman teen is imposing big consequences. Lythcott-Haims presented recent studies which indicate that college students are more depressed, anxious and hopeless than ever before. She explained that self-awareness and confidence are developed through a mastery of basic problem-solving skills. Skills that are found in the everyday tasks of life: keeping your room clean, making yourself breakfast, remembering your own deadlines and learning to self-advocate when things go wrong.

When we take away our child’s opportunity to solve problems, we also eliminate that process of growth. When we allow our kids to act for themselves (drawing up boundaries and giving guidance and love along the way), they will develop the confidence and compassion that they need to be successful adults. This won’t necessarily translate to straight A’s for every child, but, HERE’S THE CLINCHER, straight A’s aren’t the recipe for success.

King, visibly shocked and overjoyed, exclaimed, “Oh my god,” before putting her hands over her mouth in disbelief. She quickly said yes, and the pool deck erupted in applause and cheers, capturing a moment of pure joy and love. Later that evening, as she accepted her medal for her second-place finish, King enthusiastically pointed to her left hand and engagement ring, sharing the news during her poolside interview. “News travels fast, but I’m engaged,” she said, flashing her ring again for the cameras.
