In a devastating turn of events, a Pennsylvania couple’s family vacation in Hutchinson Island, Florida, turned into a heartbreaking tragedy when they drowned Thursday after being caught in a rip current. Brian Warter, 51, and Erica Wishard, 48, were vacationing with their six children when the incident occurred at Stuart Beach, a serene stretch on the southeastern coast of Florida’s barrier island. It was their first vacation as a blended family of eight, as Brian and Erica were engaged.
According to reports from the Martin County Sheriff’s Office, the family of eight was enjoying a day at Stuart Beach when Warter, Wishard, and two of their teenage children were suddenly swept away by a rip current. Despite the valiant efforts of the teens to rescue their parents, the strong current proved overwhelming, forcing the children to swim ashore for their own safety.
Martin County Ocean Rescue lifeguards swiftly responded, locating Warter and Wishard in distress and immediately initiating CPR upon bringing them ashore. Martin County Fire Rescue paramedics continued life-saving efforts en route to Cleveland Clinic North, where despite exhaustive attempts by medical staff, the couple tragically succumbed to the ordeal.
Beach Conditions and Warnings
Earlier that day, Martin County Fire Rescue had issued warnings via social media about hazardous beach conditions, including rough surf and strong rip currents, with red flags prominently flying at nearby Jensen Beach, Stuart Beach, and Hobe Sound. These warnings advised caution and urged only strong swimmers to venture into the water.
