‘The Chosen’: A Binge-Worthy TV Series to Watch With The Whole Family

We all know the struggle: you sit down after a long day of child rearing, adulting, and the 9-5 grind, only to spend the precious hour before bed scrolling through possible TV show options, just to wind up watching Friends for the umpteenth time.

Well look no further folks, because The Chosen is the binge-worthy television series you didn’t know you were missing, and it’s perfect for the whole family!

A friend of ours recommended The Chosen while we were all at home during 2020. And if I’m being honest, he didn’t just recommend it, he RAVED about it.

It’s the first ever multi-season show about the life and Gospel of Jesus Christ, and it’s FREE to stream on any device through The Chosen app, and now on Amazon Prime Video.

The series, released by VidAngel, has garnered attention in Christian circles and secular ones, as it became the No. 1 crowdfunded media project in history, with over 16,000 investors giving $10 million in 2019 to see the project come to fruition.

This isn’t your average “Jesus Project.” The Chosen has earned a 100% on Rotten Tomatoes and 9.8 stars on IMDB. In January 2020, The Chosen joined acclaimed productions like Netflix’s The Crown and Dolly Parton’s Heartstrings, earning two Movieguide Award nominations. Actor Jonathan Roumie, who portrays Jesus in the series, took home the Grace Award for a TV Performance. In 2022, the show took home a Dove Award for “Inspirational Film of the Year.”

The show has become a worldwide phenomenon, garnering more than 413 million views after just two seasons. All episodes of The Chosen: Season 3 are also now available, with experts suggesting the viewership will soar past that half-billion mark. The final two episodes of Season 3 were premiered as one production in theaters on February 2nd and 3rd, grossing nearly $14.7 worldwide in its run.

“Playing the role of Jesus Christ is the preeminent honor, not only of my career, but of my life,” Roumie said. “With this series, we’re afforded the opportunity to take our time with the greatest story ever told…and savor it.”

In a recent interview with Fox News, Roumie emphasized that The Chosen is not a religious project for religious people. Like any binge-worthy show it’s simply filmmakers, storytellers, and actors who are determined to tell a good story. (Or in this case, the greatest story ever told).

“This should be watched for anybody that is fans of historical dramas, anybody that’s a fan of well-researched historical productions,” Roumie said. “And if you like period pieces, if you like, well-made shows, well-written shows, this is going to appeal to so many people. And I think that they can get past the idea of like, ‘Oh, it’s a faith show and it’s not for me.’ You don’t have to [believe in God]. There’s no prerequisite. This is going to appeal to people beyond the faith spectrum. And it has.”

With three full seasons available now, The Chosen is binge-worthy and a must-see for every member of the family. Filming of The Chosen: Season 4 began in March, with the season slated to be released in 2024.

Familiar Gospel characters like Mary Magdalene, Peter, and Matthew are given full lives and exciting contexts that balance faithful, biblical interpretation with a fresh lens of imagination.

The Chosen is the first media project in history to ever be released globally on it’s own app, which has been downloaded and streamed in over 180 countries worldwide.

In 2020, VidAngel CEO, Neal Harmon, spoke to the overwhelming success of the project. “Two years ago, we embarked on a journey to create the first multi-season series about Jesus and broke the all-time crowdfunding record for a media project,” Harmon explained. “Seeing the investor support, the completed season one and reactions to the series from around the globe, we’ve come to realize this is the start of something very, very special.”

Filmmaker Dallas Jenkins hopes viewers will “pay it forward,” by donating so that others around the world can experience the series, which has so far been translated into 70 languages.

In December of 2022, The Chosen partnered with Colorado Springs non-profit, Come and See Foundation, which will raise money to produce future seasons of the show. Since Come and See Foundation is a charity with 501 (c) (3) status, contributions made by American citizens and residents are tax deductible in the United States.

The creators hope “to make The Chosen bigger than the Game of Thrones billion-view record” and “the most-watched global series in history.” They’re on their way.
