“Win or Lose, God Is Still on the Throne”: Vikings Quarterback Kirk Cousins After First NFL Playoff Victory

Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins scored his very playoff victory on Sunday in quite memorable fashion—throwing the touchdown pass to tight end Kyle Rudolph in overtime. The game-winning move led the Vikings to a 26-20 victory over the New Orleans Saints. It was the first playoff overtime win in the team’s history.

Cousins completed 19 out of 31 passes for 242 yards in his second career playoff start and first with the Minnesota Vikings. The quarterback had previously undergone great criticism for not winning a single playoff game in his career.

After the big win, FOX interviewed Cousins, asking how his faith helped him through those challenging times.

“My faith is important to me, it’s the foundation of my life. And ultimately that’s where I gain my peace and my strength,” Cousins replied. “Win or lose today, God is still on the throne and I take comfort in that.”

The 31-year-old has been very outspoken about his faith in the past, saying that Jesus sets the foundation for his life.

“The ultimate foundation of my life is to be a fully devoted follower of Jesus,” he told the Sports Spectrum Podcast last year. “And that means so much more than just checking a box and saying you’re a Christian.”

Cousins explains that he handles the pressure of his weighty role on the field by keeping his priorities in perspective. For him, that means putting God first.

“God is so much bigger than pleasing a boss or pleasing a teacher or winning a group of friends,” said Cousins. “God is so much bigger than that. He can lead you to the right people. He can create the right environment, the right situation, the right college opportunity. You don’t have to bend over to the ways of the world. You can work and strive to please the Lord and then He will make things work out for you in turn.”
