Zach and Tori Roloff, stars of “Little People, Big World,” recently sparked a heated debate after discussing their views on abortion in a new episode of their podcast, “Raising Heights.” The couple opened up about their miscarriage experience in March 2021, which profoundly impacted their views on the controversial topic. Their candid conversation has received significant backlash, reflecting the deeply polarizing nature of the abortion debate.
Tori’s Perspective: A Personal Transformation
Tori Roloff described how her miscarriage shifted her perspective on abortion. Previously, she identified as apolitical, but the trauma of losing a baby changed her stance dramatically.
“When you get pregnant, that’s a baby, you know, and so when we lost that baby, it was like, we just lost a part of our family,” Tori began. “Previous to this situation, I was very apolitical. But I think being in that room and being as traumatized as I was, it became black and white for me in that room. I’m not OK with this. Like, I would never choose to be in this room and I don’t understand how someone could choose to be in that room.”
Zach’s Analogy and Stance
Zach Roloff acknowledged the complexities of the issue but used an analogy to express his views on the majority of abortion cases. He recognized that there are situations, such as pregnancies resulting from sexual assault, that are exceptionally difficult, but he focused on what he described as the “majority” of cases.
“If I go out and have beers at the bar and drink and drive, get in an accident, I’m going to jail; you know it’s a consequence I chose,” Zach stated. “We don’t think about this, that the choice to have sex, that was the choice. We want to choose the consequence, the outcome.”
Tori Roloff on Abortion as Health Care
Tori further elaborated on her struggle with the idea of abortion being categorized as health care.
“I don’t agree that abortion is health care,” she said. “It’s like no, no, no, no.”
Viewer Reactions and Backlash
The episode quickly garnered significant backlash, with many listeners expressing their disagreement in the comments. Some pointed out the complexity of the issue and criticized the Roloffs for their seemingly simplistic views.
“The D&C you got?” one person commented. “It’s an abortion. Meaning HEALTHCARE. You would have gone septic and died without it. But go on about how it’s not healthcare.”
Another user emphasized the importance of respecting personal choice: “Just because you can’t understand why someone would make that choice, doesn’t mean you get to take away someone else’s ability to make it. What was traumatizing for you may be traumatizing adversely for someone else — like being forced to go through with a pregnancy they do not want.”
