“This Christmas I Want Food”: What These Foster Kids Want For Christmas Is Heartbreaking

0

You won’t find many people in this world who are more honest than a child. That’s something Rayn Boncie knows better than anyone. Her nonprofit, Things of My Very Own, Inc., seeks to bridge the gap between what social services provide to children in the foster care system, and the items that they actually need. Since 2008, Things of My Very Own has served thousands of individuals, and Rayn believes this will be a record-breaking year.

“I don’t want these children lying in bed at night wondering if they’re worth it. I want them to know that they are. I want them to know someone in the world cares about them,” shares Rayn Boncie, CEO/Founder.

Rayn Boncie and Her Nonprofit Help Foster Children Every Christmas

During the holiday season, Things of My Very Own collects Christmas gifts for foster children. Many children write their wish list on a tag, which members of the community will collect and then buy gifts to fulfill each kid’s wish.

Their sobering responses weren’t that of a typical child at Christmas

None of them asked for this year’s hottest toy, or another video game to add to their collection. No, the children who filled out these tags listed their “innermost dreams”—things that should be part of everyone’s childhood.

A Stanley Thermos Survived a Car Fire – The Company Responded by Replacing More than Just the Mug

0

Suffering a car fire is terrifying as well as devastating, but TikTok user Danielle’s car fire also lit up TikTok in a viral way she was not expecting.

Danielle shared a video of the torched interior of her Kia Sorento with her fellow TikTokers, but the real purpose of her video was not to show the severity of the fire: it was to demonstrate what survived the flames.

If you can believe it, it was Danielle’s Stanley thermos.

In the video, Danielle walks up to the torched car, gets her Stanley tumbler out of the cup holder and shakes it to show that not only has it survived, but that it still has ICE in it!
“Everybody’s so concerned about if the Stanley spills, but what about if it melts? Fire yesterday,” she says, “Still has ice in it!”

Her video caption reads: “Thirsty after you catch on fire? @Stanley1913 is like no problem I gotchu”.

@danimarielettering Thirsty after you catch on fire? @Stanley 1913 is like no problem i gotchu #fyp #carfire #accident #stanleycup ♬ original sound – Danielle

As TikTok videos will do, Danielle’s quickly went viral, with over 8 million likes to date! Commenters immediately started calling for Stanley to sponsor Danielle. Others called on Stanley to start making indestructible cars to go with their popular drink tumblers.

The powers that be at Stanley saw Danielle’s video, and since they are apparently no dummies when it comes to marketing, they responded with a video of their own. But what was shocking to Danielle was not just that they responded, but what they actually said in the video. It was beyond her wildest dreams, I’m sure.

Stanley Company President Terence Reilly himself recorded the video response, saying:

“We’ve all seen your video. Wow, what an ordeal and we’re all really glad you’re safe. “I’ve seen a lot of comments that we should send you some Stanleys. Well, we are gonna send you some Stanleys. But there’s one more thing. We’ve never done this before and we’ll probably never do it again, but we’d love to replace your vehicle.”

That’s right: unbelievably, Stanley not only sent Danielle a few more Stanley thermoses, but they are also replacing her torched car!

Follow-up videos from Danielle reveal more details about the fire, show off her new box of Stanleys, and also promise “New car details coming soon.” One can only hope that when her new car arrives, it will be all the rage on TikTok as well.

As for Stanley, I think this pretty much cements their cups’ reputation as indestructible. But in case you are not yet convinced, you can check out a section on their website called “Stories of the Unbreakables” where you’ll read more crazy Stanley survival stories, include another fire survivor (this time it was the only that that survived a hotel room fire!)

Best of luck to Danielle as she enjoys her super cold sips and a brand new car!

“Let’s Get This Baby Alive” – Teen Saves 3-Year-Old From Drowning on Thanksgiving Day

0

A California family is extra thankful these days after their joyous Thanksgiving celebration turned to terror, then back to joy. You see, while the Atkinson family was busy with Thanksgiving prep, 3-year-old Maxine wandered unnoticed out to the family pool and slipped in. Footage from the family’s home video camera shows she was in the pool for about four minutes before her uncle found her laying face down.t

“She was pretty much lifeless,” family member Kirsten Atkinson told TODAY.

When she heard the toddler’s uncle screaming for help, Kirsten says her 15-year-old daughter Madison reacted immediately and intentionally. Because she had taken a sports medicine class at school, Madison knew CPR and went to work on her little relative right away while family members were on the phone with 911.

“Madison’s just pumping away for for a couple of minutes, and finally, Maxine starts to open her eyes and start to breathe,” Kirsten Atkinson recalled. “The dispatcher said, ‘Put her on her side.’ And when we did that, Maxine opened her eyes and starts to literally breathe on her own.”

She also added that the teenager maintained a calm, collected composure the entire time she was saving little Maxine’s life.

“I was just trying to remember what I’m supposed to do,” she told TODAY. “I was just like let’s get this baby alive — no one else knew CPR.”

When the first responders arrived, Kirsten Atkinson said they were stunned to learn that Maxine’s rescuer was just a teen.

“Their faces were just like, this could have been so different,” she said. “They commended her and they said that, you know, she has performed a miracle.”

The Atkinsons now say that everyone in the family is committed to follow Madison’s example, learn CPR, and be equipped to save a life whenever they might need to. As someone who has been writing news stories in the parenting space for years, I also hope they are looking to install some kind of fence or barrier to keep little ones out of the pool when they are not accompanied by an adult, and I suggest that for every family with a pool.

Kirsten Atkinson says that her family now has a different outlook on Thanksgiving thanks to this poolside miracle.

“We were able to celebrate Thanksgiving in a different way, right? It was about, you know, how precious life is and how things can change in the blink of an eye,” she said.

To add to their thankfulness, Atkinson reports that little Maxine is making a full recovery! Here’s hoping sharing Madison and Maxine’s story is inspiring people to get the life-saving CPR and first aid training that make these kinds of miracles possible.

Why Do We Celebrate Anxiety?

0

“Girl, I am so busy! I’m about to lose my mind!”

We make a joke, make light of the situation, while in reality we just went into the bathroom and cried. Have you noticed yet that we’ve become a society who wears busyness like a badge of honor? It’s as if the fuller our plate here on earth, the greater our reward one day will be. But to me that represents a merit based system the world has created rather than the grace we’ve been gifted. We end up building who we are on what we do, and I don’t think it’s supposed to be that way.

A man who goes to his job sun-up til sundown, 6-7 days a week is a “good provider.” To be a good mother we are convinced we must reach a certain plateau. Our children must be pristinely groomed in the latest fashion, ready for a photo op at a moment’s notice. You need the right brands, the right house, and the right vehicle. Success is equated with the size of your pocket book, and your Christianity is based on Sunday attendance or how many ways you donate. And while I’ll be the first to admit those things do have their importance, we’ve convoluted our thinking to assume they’re the most important.

Young moms are bringing their babies to Sunday service not because they crave the presence of Jesus and His worshipping church, but rather because it’s expected. They dress their tots in matching, monogrammed outfits not for their own pleasure, but rather to appear like their life is as presentable as their children’s wardrobes. We lose sight of the ragged appearance of the Gospel, like our piety holds precedence over the bloody scene on Calvary. Not to say we don’t need reverence, but when you place it above the cross you’ve elevated man before His Savior.

We become what we do. It’s all a show. There’s a parade of what a perfect life should be, and everyone is in line to put on their costume for the day. Every day becomes the same, a repetition of being who we think we need to be, not who we were meant to be. In other words, we’re allowing the world to direct our steps, and we’re pushing the will of God into the closet with the gift bags and tissue paper we hold on to for a rainy day. Do you really think the Lord is grading our performance?

God wants our love, and the world wants our distraction. If we get lost in becoming what we see on Instagram, we’ll miss who Jesus wants us to become. If we’re placing our importance on how many plates we can spin, we’ll forget who to cry out to when they fall. When our perfect world comes crashing down, we’ll be lost on how to pick up the pieces.

We worry, oh Lord, do we worry. We worry where our sustenance will come from. We place our trust in horses and chariots to win our wars, for its our savings account that saves us. It’s our insurance that ensures we’re taken care of. It’s our devotion to our clean homes, cleanly swept walkway, and community reputation that gives us our purpose. We shine our windows so the world can see the outward beauty we project, but the chimneys, those hidden, dark places are filthy with soot. Our hearts are corrupted, but our front yard is maintained. We can check the boxes of soccer mom and baseball dad, but meanwhile we’re sleeping in separate beds. We can throw the perfect holiday party, but our soul feels as dirty as the kitchen sink the day after. But at least our Christmas card looks professional.

We feed our satisfaction with shopping sprees and our worried mind with a bottle of wine, yet our souls are in torment; they are hungry. We’ve become a very anxious lot, and the craziest part is we assume that’s just how it’s supposed to be.

John 14:27 (NIV)

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.

We’ve become a very anxious people, and the enemy will tell us that is to be celebrated, as if the fuller your plate, the fuller your cup, but the problem really becomes what that cup is overflowing. Is it Jesus? No! It’s bitterness, anger, and discontent. It’s worry, depression, and a sense of unfulfillment. We think the fastest rabbit wins the race, and that’s why you see people on their deathbed, at the finish line, weeping in regret. The fastest runner doesn’t win, but the one who can enjoy and learn from the journey. Who even remembers how to stop and smell the roses?

We make funny memes about how the Holiday Season has us freaking out, and we laugh and laugh. Meanwhile our hearts are hurting. We end up on the other side of January wondering where the joy went, why it can’t be like it was when we were a child.

Have you ever wondered why those MLM companies are so successful? It’s not just whatever product they’re pushing. It’s the dream they’re selling. A dream to not have to run so fast. A dream that you can slow down, off-load your daily to-do’s, and enjoy not having to worry about money! Money… that root of all evil, yet it’s only evil because of the focus we allow it. I’m guilty. We all just miss the fact that peace is here for the taking, but we have to lay down the things that don’t matter. What we’ve really become is a culture that places our importance on everything but the Kingdom of God right here, right now in our lives. Yes, Jesus come quick, I agree, but we forget that He is here right now, in our hearts, yet hidden by worldly distraction.

I wonder if we can change? I wonder if we can stop assuming a fast-paced anxiety is the best we’ll get this side of eternity, if we can understand that freedom has already been won when Jesus died for us? He didn’t give His life for us to be slaves to time, our workload, commitments, and routine. Indeed, He’s freed us from that sin that so easily entangles us.

Maybe we can step out in freedom by laying life down. Gain more by letting go of it all. Take an inventory of our full plate, and pick today to scrap off the pieces that aren’t giving us life. Jesus has given us life, but also an abundant life, a life free from anxiety. The Bible instructs us to “fear not” 365 times, one for every day of the year. We fear the things we cannot change, yet many of those same things we can change by letting them go. We can stop celebrating anxiety and instead cast it down.

Philippians 4:6 (NIV)

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.

“God’s Timing Is Always Perfect”: NFL Player Carson Wentz On New Baby and New Contract

0

Few parents of small children ever have a “boring” week, but last week was especially exciting for NFL player Carson Wentz. After signing a new contract with the Los Angeles Rams earlier in the week, he and wife Madison welcomed their third baby girl, Hayes Emersyn, on Friday November 10th. Now that’s a doozy of a few days!

The 2018 Super Bowl champ welcomed his new baby girl on Instagram, writing:

“Girl Dad x3 ! Meet our new little blessing… Hayes Emersyn. What a wild week it’s been, but I’m beyond grateful this little girl made her entrance into this crazy world at just the right time so I could be home for it! Gods timing is always perfect…. learning that more and more everyday.”

Hayes joins big sisters Hudson, 2, and Hadley, 3 – making the already busy Wentz household quite a bit more hectic, I’m sure! In his post, Wentz made sure to shout out his wife Madison, saying, “So thankful for my incredible wife and all she does for me and our 3 girlies! She was a rockstar once again! Welcome to our crazy fam and our crazy adventure, my sweet Hayes. We love you so much already!”

The couple, who married in 2018 after Carson’s Super Bowl win with the Philadelphia Eagles, first announced their third impending arrival on Instagram back in July, with Wentz joking about how having three girls might just be a test for his sanity, “We’re so grateful that God has blessed us with… another GIRL coming soon! Can’t wait to see all the adventures that lie ahead for these girlies and how quickly dad can lose his hair ,” he wrote, adding, “But in all seriousness, we’re so excited to meet this little one and thankful for all the support we have!”

Personally I’d be more worried about his wife’s sanity since he’ll be away from home quite a bit as an NFL player, but as all moms do, I know she will rise to the occasion, and with the couple’s faith in God, she will truly never be alone.

Travis Kelce Wows Moms By Understanding Their “Mental Load”

Two-time Super Bowl champ and Kansas City Chiefs all-time leading receiver Travis Kelce, also known as Taylor Swift’s boyfriend, is wowing women – specifically moms – for a new reason this week. On his podcast “New Heights,” Travis showed that he gets what moms go through for their families while interviewing (and poking fun at) his brother, Philadelphia Eagles player Jason Kelce.

Travis and Jason, a married father of three, were discussing Jason’s overly-casual look at the premier of his documentary, Kelce. Travis literally cry-laughs while razzing his brother for attempting to blame his wife, Kylie, for forgetting his jeans. It’s beyond hilarious! In a video posted to Instagram, you can see the whole exchange, and watch the realization come across Jason’s face that yeah, his wife was probably a little too busy parenting three girls under five to remember to bring her husband his pants.

The hilarious back and forth between brothers went like this:

“I was gonna have jeans on but Kylie …” Jason said.

“Kylie what?” Travis shot back.

“Kylie was running late. I just came straight from football. Kylie was going to bring the jeans. Kylie was late,” Jason said.

Travis then responded with the question literally all wives and moms were asking:

“Why didn’t Jason bring jeans for Jason?”

Jason continued trying to defend himself, saying  “Because I was at football. And I needed the jeans for after football. I’m not going to wear jeans all day. That just doesn’t sound fun.”

Meanwhile, Travis is dying of laughter, knowing his brother is digging his own grave.

Jason’s expression changes and he sees the humor in it too, admitting, “Alright I’m realizing now, I probably can’t blame Kylie for this. Soooo, yeah, I wore shorts and sandals.”

But Travis wasn’t going to let his brother off that easily! Still cracking up, he adds, “She was too busy putting jeans on the three girls.”

Jason continues to realize the error of his ways, conceding, “Yeah, she was too busy getting the entire family situated with the babysitter and then getting herself ready and making sure her parents are with her.”

BINGO, Jason! BINGO!

Travis still wasn’t ready to let it go though, hilariously imitating Jason, saying:

“I can just see you pulling up, [saying] ‘You don’t have my jeans? I’m going to look like an idiot!'”

“Gosh,” Jason said while Travis continued to cry-laugh at his brother’s expense. “So true. So true.”

Although both brothers are amazing on the football field, Travis is the one who scored with this interview. The comments on his Instagram video prove that the moms were a-swooning.

“Travis has every married woman wishing he was her husband after this ” said one comment.

“That’s the hottest thing I’ve ever heard Travis say,” said another.

“Proof Travis has was it takes to be a good husband.” said yet another.

But some commenters also want to hear from Kylie Kelce on this topic.

“I just feel like Kylie needs to be on the podcast every few weeks to speak on things like these! ” said one commenter. And I can’t help but agree! I think Mrs. Kelce’s perspective might add another level of hilarity.

Good on Travis for recognizing ALLLL the things moms and wives do! Now let’s hope Ms. Taylor Swift saw this video, too.

Mom Warns of ‘Grooming Behavior’ After Unmarked Delivery Driver Targets Her Sons in Family Driveway

0

We love that our lives and testimonies are available to anyone God wants to touch through the stories He writes for our family.

We aren’t often given second chances, and the way I see it, if God gave us one chance and then graciously gave us a second, we can’t ignore it. We won’t get a third.

A few days ago our boys were playing out front. In our own yard, only feet away from the open door where we stood just inside. A normal day.

A delivery driver pulled into the driveway in an unmarked van just far enough so he could have a short conversation with one of our young boys who played in the yard. He walked a few packages to the front door and walked back to his van, opened the front door, reached inside, called our son over to his van, and handed him something. He got back in his van and backed it down the driveway, where he stopped at the bottom, parked, got out near where our son was playing, opened the back of his van, and stood rummaging around while he talked to our son and called the other one over. According to our videos, he spoke to our boys for about 30 seconds before they came running inside excitedly yelling that our delivery driver had given them money! The driver didn’t deliver any more packages once they ran off. He closed his van doors, got back in, and left.

I have to be honest, we first responded with, “That was so kind!” and “What a nice guy!” as our boys ran off to put their money in their bank accounts.

About 15 minutes went by and as I walked into our bedroom, I was hit with a sickening pit in my stomach and thoughts began screaming in my mind out of nowhere.

“What if this was the first step in his grooming of our boys?! What if next time it’s $100?! What if next time it’s the promise of a shopping trip if the get in his van?! He was too close…. he could have grabbed them! Who is he?!? Why money?!? Has he been watching them?!?”

I found my husband Joey and pulled him aside.

I told him this didn’t feel right. It felt strange and almost yucky. I was afraid for him to come back. We needed to talk to the boys again about strangers, but it felt like this was more.

“I know. I agree,” Joey said. “I’ll call the company and file a report. This doesn’t feel right.”

While he did that, I filed a police report.

Within an hour, with the help of our many videos and photos from cameras around our home, the individual had been identified and every single official we spoke to confirmed our fears and our actions. They educated us on how to keep our kids safe, put a flag on our home address, and agreed that what had happened wasn’t acceptable from anyone who doesn’t know our family personally. No one should call a child to their car, give them anything without their parent’s consent and knowledge, and in this time and age they even mentioned the crucial aspect of social distancing for delivery workers and the breach of that, alone.

Why am I taking the risk to tell you this? Especially when technically ‘nothing happened’.

Because I’m shaken. I’m angry and I’m sad. Our boys can’t play out front anymore. We’ve had to role play and develop “safe words” for our kids. We’ve shown them what houses to run to if they need help and what to yell if someone tries to take them.

We’ve had to consider our son Hunter, who has no words. No concept of safety, especially when he’s at his own HOUSE! Local authorities now know who he is and have a photo of him on file.

I’ve seen the Facebook posts and watched the Instagram stories about trafficking attemptsand kidnapping and grooming. I’ve re-watched them all over the past few days.

Not ONE single thing separates what happened to our boys from what happened in those videos except one thing: This happened at our HOME!!

I thought I’d know. I thought I’d be ready. I watch them so carefully! I always know what’s going on around us.

It took us 15 minutes for a red flag to even wave in our gut and he was gone.

Until next time…?!

“Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.” —1 Peter 5:8

I don’t know what to tell you. I’m clearly not a pro and I have a lot to learn myself about watching my children and what goes on around us. But please be sure they know what you consider to be a “stranger.”

Find a “safe word” — one that only you and they know. If an adult approaching them hasn’t been given their safe word from you, they know that person isn’t safe! It’s easy. Get some cameras. The ones we have aren’t expensive but they worked so well! Keep your kids with you.

We don’t often get second chances. I don’t know exactly what this was, but I’m so incredibly thankful for what we learned and for a second chance.

‘Don’t Ignore The Itch’ — Pregnant Mom’s Facebook Rant May Have Saved Her Baby from Dying in Utero

0

Well into her third trimester of pregnancy, Christina DePino had had enough. The first-time mommy-to-be took to Facebook in a complaint about terrible itching throughout her pregnancy — a complaint she says may have saved her daughter’s life.

“What had started as an all-over itch started to become more pronounced on the palms of my hands and the soles of my feet,” DePino told TODAY. “It got to the point that I could no longer sleep at night … my arms and legs were bleeding from all the scratching.”

After ranting about the discomfort on Facebook, several of DePino’s friends cautioned that she may have cholestasis — a hormonal condition that affects the mother’s gallbladder and can cause babies to die in utero when left undetected.

[Thirty-five] weeks pregnant, DePino googled “cholestasis of pregnancy,” and after learning that it could cause her baby to be stillborn, she contacted her doctor and moved forward with the diagnostic testing that would diagnose the condition.

She was officially diagnosed with intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy and gave birth at 37 weeks after doctors recommended labor be induced to lower the risks of health complications to her daughter.

“As soon as I was holding my beautiful baby girl in my arms, all I could think was, ‘What if?’ ” DePino said. “What if I had not complained on Facebook? What if no one had told me? All I could think was that I had to let other women know. I didn’t want any of them to wonder what had happened to their perfectly healthy baby.”

She made it her mission to inform other mothers about the signs and symptoms of ICP by turning to the place where it all started: Facebook.

In a post that has now been shared over 57,000 times, DePino urges expectant mothers to be their own advocate and contact their doctor if they think they might be suffering from ICP.

Facebook

“I would like to urge pregnant women who are suffering from severe itching to be their own advocate,” said DePino. “Know the signs and symptoms and then contact your doctor. Don’t ignore the itch, a simple blood test could save your baby’s life.”

“Together We Serve” — How Two Strangers’ Tattoos Helped This Woman Experience God

0

When Michelle Torino-Barcelos and her husband went to lunch on Sunday, they never expected to encounter God. At least not in the way that they did.

“Allow me to share with y’all this beautiful story that happened today,” she wrote on Facebook.

Michelle and her husband were having a late afternoon lunch at McAllister’s Deli when she found herself in a beautiful game of people-watching.

“I noticed a guy seated on our opposite side of the table waiting for his food,” Michelle writes, explaining that it was the gentleman’s tattoo that caught her attention.

Scribed on his left arm were the words, “Together We Serve,” with a cross beside it.

Together We Serve

Blown away by the simple beauty of those words, Michelle excitedly told her husband to discreetly have a look, then started on a rabbit trail of her own mind, trying to figure out the meaning.

“I told my husband, it can have double meanings. The word ‘we’ may mean as we, as a whole serving God, or ‘we’ can also mean him, together with his other half; it can be his girlfriend or his wife. That I am not so sure of.”

She didn’t have to brainstorm for long. To Michelle’s delight, a beautiful woman soon joined him at the table. Michelle was quick to update her husband after seeing that this girl ALSO had a “Together We Serve” tattoo on her arm.

“I thought it was like the sweetest thing ever that I saw from a couple, having that same kind of tattoo written on their arms! I was thinking, #‎RelationshipGoals!?”

But what really melted Michelle’s heart, and created a real connection between her and the strangers sitting just tables away from her, was when the couple grabbed each other’s hands and prayed.

I was like blown away! Not only by seeing how sweet they were but by just simply being bold enough in professing their faith even in public. And for me, that is really what a relationship goal must be!”

As the couple enjoyed their meal, Michelle says her eyes were still glued to them. In awe of the love they radiated for both each other and their savior, Michelle felt God trying to tell her something. She decided to approach them.

“Just to say that we were blessed and inspired by just looking at them, their tattoo, and their faith and love for God,” she explains. “And I did! I excused myself and introduce myself and my husband to them, and just tell them how happy and inspired we are looking at them.”

Michelle says she and her husband found out that the couple had just gotten married a few months back, and they both serve in the United States Army.

“Not only that they want to serve their country together, [but knowing] they also want to serve God together…that is what their tattoo really means. And that is the best #‎RelationshipGoal ever!”

Together We Serve

Michelle thanked the couple for the beautiful reminder of how God should be the center of their relationship, and how we are all called to serve selflessly.

But their interaction didn’t stop there!

The couple was overwhelmed by Michelle’s kind words, as they had not realized the impact that their tattoos and actions had had on someone else. Then they asked Michelle and her husband if they could pray for them.

“For the first time in our entire lives, never had we experienced strangers praying for us! Inside that cafe, all four of us held each others hands, bowed our heads as these [sic] beautiful couple from the US army prayed for me and my husband! They prayed that we may always be blessed, and that we may continue to be a blessing to everyone else, and that may our love for God prosper and grow just as how God’s love and grace overflows in our lives. How amazing that moment is!”

Michelle says she knows that moment was not an accident, but a divine appointment.

“God brought us together there for a reason. God always has His special way of reminding us of His great love for us.”

Michelle’s excitement is a beautiful testimony to the love she witnessed — both that of the couple and that of God. It’s so crazy to see the incredible ways God can use a “normal” lunch to show people who He is.

These Strangers Have Spent Thanksgiving Together Every Year After a Wrong Text 7 Years Ago — This Year They’re Inviting You to Their Table

It’s a story of fate that sounds straight out of a Hallmark holiday film. Back in 2016, in an attempt to make Thanksgiving plans with her grandson, Wanda Dench accidentally texted a stranger about coming to Thanksgiving dinner. The recipient of that text, a then-17-year-old, Jamal Hinton.

The two exchanged what has now become a viral series of text messages. After he jokingly asked if he could join anyway, Dench welcomed him, and they became friends.

What started as an accidental text exchange turned into viral posts on social media whereby the internet was following along with this unlikely pairing for a Thanksgiving to remember.

For the past six years since their first Thanksgiving together, Jamal and Wanda have kept the tradition going. They were able to safely gather during covid, following the death of Wanda’s husband. And over the years their friendship has continued to inspire others and restore faith in humanity.

This year, Jamal and Wanda are teaming up with Airbnb to bring others in on their Thanksgiving tradition.

Wanda is opening her home in Prescott, Arizona for one night this month, where two guests will get to join her and Jamal for their annual Thanksgiving dinner. The cost is just $16, an ode to the year 2016, when Wanda and Jamal met.

“I said from the jump of our first Thanksgiving that I always wanted to have more people join our Thanksgiving and be able to celebrate with us and have the amount of fun that we have together,” Jamal told USA Today.

The stay will take place Nov. 20 and is good for up to two people. Prospective guests can request to book on Airbnb’s website beginning Nov. 14 at 1 p.m. EDT.

Those looking to book will have to 18 and older as per Airbnb’s guidelines and have a verified profile and good track record on the platform.

The dinner will be everyone’s Thanksgiving favorites including Wanda’s not-so-homemade pumpkin pie.

“I used to make good pumpkin pie, but Costco can do it better than me, so we’re having my favorite Costco pumpkin pie,” said Dench, 66.

They also like to play board games. “I have a whole closetful, so I’ll let everybody pick,” she said.

Of course, guests will also get to join in on the pair’s annual Thanksgiving selfie—an internet staple since their first Thanksgiving back in 2016.

The pair is looking forward to meeting new people and sharing in the thing that first brought them together.

“For me, it’s always the great conversations,” Jamal said. “I mean, me and Wanda, we talk about anything. We talked about tattoos, we talk about conspiracies that we think of, we talk about our families, we talk about our goals and our future and things that we want to accomplish and do.”

Over the years, Wanda and Jamal have remained great friends and constants in each others’ lives. They know each others’ families and have truly embodied friendship. Wanda hopes their story inspires others and helps people open their hearts and homes to people they may not have otherwise.

“That would be pretty cool to see people wanting to share a good experience and then open it up to other strangers as well.”
